In Focus: Ulrich Seidl

Van 12 tot 16 maart 2008 vindt de vierde editie van het Documentair FilmPlatform ZONE plaats. Naast het vertonen van een beperkt aantal documentaires legt ZONE het accent op professionele ontmoetingen en beschouwingen met betrekking tot de eigentijdse kunstzinnige documentaire. Zoals gewoonlijk staat in het vierde Documentair FilmPlatform ZONE een cineast in focus. Met de centrale gasten uit de vorige edities, Mika Taanila en Deimantas Narkevicius, wilden we de aandacht vestigen op het complexe raakvlak van documentaire film en videokunst. Om het evenwicht te waarborgen en om een brug te leggen naar onze allereerste gast, Viktor Kossakovsky, nodigden we dit jaar Ulrich Seidl uit.

Deze Oostenrijkse filmmaker heeft een internationale reputatie vergaard als criticaster van de hedendaagse Westerse maatschappij. Seidl beschouwt zichzelf niet als een volbloed documentairemaker, maar benadrukt dat zijn films telkens een bepaalde graad van zowel fictie als documentaire in zich hebben. Met zijn films “Tierische Liebe”, “Hundstage”, “Models”, etc. deelt Seidl rake klappen uit, maar steeds met de aanwezige ironie. Voor Seidl liggen komedie en tragedie immers erg dicht tegen elkaar aan. Seidl's werk roept velerlei vragen op, over moraliteit tov moralistisch zijn, over de verantwoordelijkheid van de cineast tov zijn onderwerp, over de interessante en misleidende grens tussen fictie en documentaire. Ulrich Seidl beantwoordt daarom perfect aan het profiel en de artistieke lijn van ZONE en we kijken dan ook uit naar de ongetwijfeld boeiende samenwerking.

Van hem tonen we een aantal minder bekende werken waaronder zijn allereerste langspeeldocumentaire. Naar goede gewoonte mag onze gast in focus ook zelf een programma samenstellen. Seidl koos ditmaal voor een documentaire van zijn goede vriend Werner Herzog. Tussen beide cineasten heerst een groot wederzijds respect, wat bij deze nog eens benadrukt wordt. Deze gast in focus zal vergezeld worden van een aantal binnen- en buitenlandse gasten, die er, samen met het publiek, zullen voor zorgen dat het Documentair FilmPlatform ZONE een jaarlijkse, unieke afspraak wordt voor uitwisseling en ontmoeting in woord en beeld.

Between the 12th and 16th of march the Documentary Film Platform ZONE is presenting its fourth edition. ZONE will show a selection of documentaries and wants to emphasize professional encounters and discourse around contemporary artistic documentary film. As usual, the fourth Documentary Film Platform ZONE will focus on one particular director. By choosing Mika Taanila and Deimantas Narkevicius as guest in focus in previous editions we wanted to draw attention to the complex confines between documentary film and video art. To even out the equation and as a reference to our first ever guest, Viktor Kossakovsky, we have decided on inviting Ulrich Seidl this year.

This Austrian filmmaker has built up an international reputation as critic of our contemporary Western society. Seidl doesn’t consider himself as a straight out documentary filmmaker, but emphasises that his films always carry a certain amount of both fiction and fact. Although his films “Animal Love”, “Dog Days” and “Models” among others pack some serious punches, he never fails to infuse them with a healthy dose of irony. Seidl argues that there is a very fine line between comedy and tragedy. His films posit a lot of questions, about morality versus acting morally, about the filmmakers responsibility towards his subject, about the interesting but misleading grey area between fiction and documentary.  Because of this, Ulrich Seidl and the Documentary FilmPlatform ZONE are a perfect match and we are looking forward to working with him.

We will be showing a few of his lesser known pieces, like his first cinematic released documentary. We also request that the guest in focus puts together a small program or selects a film that has been an inspiration to them. In this case, Seidl settled on a documentary by his good friend Werner Herzog. This guest in focus will be accompanied by a few national and international guests who’ll contribute to making ZONE an annual and unique meetingpoint.
