Artavazd Pelechian's films zijn een fusie van Oosterse en Westerse culturen. In die context zal Pelechian uitgroeien tot filmmaker, poëet en theoreticus. Zijn films zijn knap gemonteerde verzamelingen van archief- en documentair materiaal in contrastrijk zwart/wit. Pelechian speelt met herhaling van bepaalde motieven en bewegingen en werkt met beelden alsof het een soundtrack betrof. Rond een centraal thema, vaak gelieerd aan zijn Armeense roots, orkestreert hij variaties die een stroom aan private en intieme beelden opwekken. Zijn films zijn odes aan het menselijk bestaan, de natuur en de kosmos. Vorig jaar werden drie van zijn films opnieuw uitgebracht onder de titel "Artavazd Pelechian, cinéaste et poète du réel". In "Nous" (1969, 25') onderzoekt hij de identiteit en het lot van het Armeense volk. Op de tonen van Vivaldi's "De vier seizoenen" richt hij in "Les saisons" (1972, 29') zijn blik op de ijkpunten van de Armeense geschiedenis van bij het ontstaan tot het industrieel tijdperk. "Notre Siècle" (1982, 50') is tenslotte een meditatie over het veroveren van de kosmos. Een reis naar de ruimte wordt een reis naar de eigen ziel. Een klassieker en must-see!
Artavazd Pelechians films are a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Within that context Pelechian will transform into a filmmaker, a poet and a theoretician. His films are ably cut collections of archival footage and documentary material in highly contrasting black and white. Pelechian plays with the repetition of certain motives and movements en works with his images as if they were a musical score. Around a central theme, often linked to his Armenian roots, he orchestrates variations that create a flood of private and intimate images. His films are an ode to humanity, nature and the cosmos. Last year three of his films have been re-released under the title “Artavazs Pelechian, filmmaker and poet of the real.” In “Us” (1969, 25’) he explores the identity and the destiny of the Armenian people. Set to Vivaldi’s “The four seasons” he focuses in “The Seasons” (1972, 29’) on important moments throughout Armenian history right up to the industrial age. “Our Century” (1982, 50’) is finally a meditation on conquering the cosmos. A journey in space becomes a journey into one’s internal world. A classic and must-see!
